Patient Financial Counselor Role:
In this role, you will be responsible for insurance verification and eligibility, assessment of patient financial requirements and counseling patients on insurance benefits and co-payments
Obtains pre-authorization of services
Obtains and maintains accurate patient demographics
Serves as a resource to resolve special account issues and balances
You will perform the quality control function for patient accounts, ensuring all pertinent information is available and accurately documented, allowing for timely and efficient billing
Responsibilities include generating weekly status reports, communication with multiple departments, monitoring accounts for proper documentation of third-party review notification, authorizations, insurance verifications, collection of deposits and self- pay balances, securing reimbursement methods of non-insured patients, computer update of accounts and the collection of verification of relevant patient data
Ensures all insurance, demographic, and eligibility information is obtained and entered into the system in an accurate manner.
Performs insurance verification process on all third-party payers. Obtains initial and subsequent pre-authorization for services.
Re-verifies benefits and obtains authorization and/or referral as necessary.
Follows policy and procedures in regard to financial screening, arrangements and third-party demands
Verifies and assures all accounts are ready for billing with adequate supporting documentation, within the established time frames.
Adjusts credits on patient accounts prior to services being rendered.
Serves as support to patients and their family members to assure customers have access to all available funding, this involves; working with private as well as governmental agencies
Assists patients in obtaining financial assistance (i.e. Medicaid, drug replacement), outside assistance (i.e. transportation or other community services) and ensures appropriate forms completion
Initiates and completes applications for patients in need of Care Credit application requirements and installment agreements
Maintains daily contact with various departments including clinical department to assist the patient’s financial needs for services rendered.
Provides outstanding customer service and sensitivity to patients and their families and is responsive to individual needs
Provides estimates for procedures to patients, physicians’ offices, and payers as requested
Contacts referring provider in a timely manner if the needed authorization is not initiated on scheduled accounts
Determines co-pay, share of costs and deductible status using information obtained during verification process
Patient Financial Counselor Background Profile:
High School diploma or equivalent
Some college is preferred
2+ years’ experience in insurance plans, third party billing
Experience with processing a clean claim
Demonstrated experience in credit, collection and billing is required, preferably in a physician setting.
Computer proficiency with medical system software and MS Office Suite
Ability to interpret billing manuals, insurance and/or other third-party coverage
Understanding of the third-party review process
Understanding of payer funding and authorization procedures to ensure payment
Understanding of government/state payers, including eligibility factors
Knowledge of medical and insurance terminology is required
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong customer service skills and patient interview techniques
Ability to prioritize and work in a deadline driven environment
Detail oriented with strong problem-solving skills
Works well with little supervision
