Job Description
Law Firm Finance Director Responsibilities:
Financial Oversight & Reporting
Oversee all accounting operations across multiple offices
Supervise bookkeeping and ensure the integrity of QuickBooks data
Maintain expert-level proficiency in QuickBooks
Oversee LeanLaw billing integration and financial reporting
Review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
Develop financial forecasts, budgets, and long term financial strategies
Monitor profitability by practice area, office, and attorney
Establish and manage internal financial controls
Billing, Invoicing & Revenue Cycle Management
Oversee firmwide invoicing processes using LeanLaw
Ensure accurate time entry, billing accuracy, and timely invoice issuance
Monitor accounts receivable and aging reports
Develop and enforce collections strategies
Analyze realization and utilization rates
Improve billing efficiency and revenue capture
Accounting & Compliance
Ensure strict compliance with Texas IOLTA accounting rules
Oversee client account reconciliations
Supervise contingent fee disbursements
Maintain compliance with Texas Bar and regulatory requirements
Contingent Case Expense Management
Oversee tracking and reporting of contingent case costs
Monitor case related advances and expense recovery
Ensure accurate allocation and reimbursement of case expenses
Analyze contingent case profitability and cash flow exposure
Develop financial models for contingent case risk assessment
Budgeting, KPIs & Performance Metrics
Manage operational budgets to promote firm profitability
Develop and monitor firmwide financial KPIs
Conduct data analysis and financial performance reviews
Present financial performance reports to firm leadership
Identify cost control and efficiency opportunities
Implement financial best practices aligned with industry standards
Operational & Strategic Responsibilities (Secondary Focus)
Oversee Accounts Payable, direct report
Set and measure strategic operational goals
Plan and implement long term business growth strategies
Develop and enforce financial and operational policies
Provide constructive feedback to attorneys and managers regarding financial performance
Manage vendor and external partner relationships
Collaborate with HR leadership on compliance and employment matters
Maintain knowledge of Texas employment and labor laws
Law Firm Finance Director:
Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, or related field. CPA preferred but not required
Minimum 5 years of law firm financial leadership experience
Extensive hands-on experience with QuickBooks
Experience using legal billing software
Direct experience managing law firm invoicing and collections
Demonstrated expertise in IOLTA trust accounting compliance
Experience managing contingent case expenses and financial risk
Strong background in budgeting, financial modeling, and performance analytics
Knowledge of legal industry regulations, rules, and best practices
