Job Description
This is not an administrative HR role. The ideal candidate brings leadership presence, sound judgment, and the ability to coach managers while implementing structured systems that reduce organizational chaos and increase accountability.
Director of People & Office Operations Responsibilities
Human Resources Leadership
Develop and implement structured recruiting and onboarding systems
Oversee employee relations and guide managers through discipline and documentation processes
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws (FMLA, ADA, EEOC, I-9, etc.)
Maintain and update employee handbook and company policies
Lead structured performance management processes including annual reviews and quarterly check-ins
Oversee benefits administration and compensation benchmarking for non-union staff
Promote and operationalize company core values across divisions
Office Operations Leadership
Provide structure and leadership for office staff and administrative functions
Clarify job roles, reporting lines, and accountability frameworks
Improve internal workflows and cross-division communication
Establish consistent meeting cadence and operational rhythm
Identify inefficiencies and implement process improvements
Support facilities coordination and vendor relationships as needed
Organizational Leadership
Serve as a trusted advisor to ownership and division leaders
Hold managers accountable to consistent documentation and people-management standards
Build credibility with both office staff and field leadership
Drive organizational clarity and reduce day-to-day operational disruption
Director of People and Office Operations Qualifications
7+ years of progressive HR leadership experience
Experience in construction, trades, or industrial environments preferred
Union contractor experience preferred
Strong knowledge of employment law and regulatory compliance
Demonstrated success in building HR systems and organizational structure
Proven ability to coach, influence, and hold managers accountable
Strong communication and organizational skills
Bachelor’s degree required
HR certification (SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, SPHR) preferred
Success Metrics (First 12 Months)
Standardized discipline and documentation process implemented
Structured recruiting and onboarding system established
Updated employee handbook and compliance audit completed
Clear accountability chart and role definitions for office staff
Performance management framework successfully launched
Reduced owner involvement in daily personnel matters
